Yes, dentistry can be virtually pain-free, especially with modern techniques and technology. Over the years, dental professionals have developed various methods to minimise or eliminate pain during procedures. Here are some of the ways that dentistry can be pain-free:
1. Local Anaesthesia
Local anaesthetics, such as lidocaine, are commonly used to numb the area around the teeth and gums where the procedure is being performed. This numbing typically ensures that you don’t feel any pain during the procedure.
Before we administer the local anaesthetic, we will numb the area with a topical anaesthetic gel to keep you comfortable.
2. Sedation Dentistry
For patients who are anxious or undergoing more complex procedures, sedation dentistry can be an option. There are several types:
- Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas): Helps relax the patient without causing full unconsciousness.
- Oral Sedation: A pill taken before the appointment that makes the patient feel calm and drowsy.
- IV Sedation: Administered through an IV, this type can put the patient in a deep relaxed state, almost unconscious, but still able to respond to the dentist.
- General Anesthesia: For more extensive or invasive procedures, general anesthesia can be used to put the patient to sleep entirely.
At Urban Dental Studio, we do not offer sedation options, however we can put you in touch with a suitable clinic to help if the need arises.
3. Laser Dentistry
Lasers can be used in some dental procedures (such as cavity treatment or gum work), reducing the need for traditional drilling and cutting, which can sometimes cause discomfort. Lasers also tend to heal faster and result in less post-procedure pain.
4. Minimally Invasive Techniques
Advances in technology have led to techniques that minimise discomfort. Some fillings are now done with less drilling and more precision, further reducing discomfort.
We also have invested in our EMS Prophylaxis Master, an advanced dental device for professional teeth cleaning that uses a combination of air, warm water, and a special powder to remove plaque, stains, and tartar. Our patients all notice the difference from the first use and find their hygiene treatment appointments much more comfortable.
5. Post-Procedure Pain Management
After the procedure, pain can often be minimised with over-the-counter painkillers, ice packs, and follow-up care instructions. Dentists typically make sure any discomfort post-treatment is manageable with a clear plan.
6. Distraction Techniques
At Urban Dental we have T.V screens on the ceilings to help distract you from the happenings in the chair and help make the appointment. Our patients love to choose their favourite T.V show to catch up on while in the chair.
For those who are very nervous and dislike the noises our machines make we suggest bringing along some noise-cancelling headphones, where you can play your favourite music through.
7. Good Communication
Our clinicians take the time to explain what’s happening during each step of the procedure (if you would like them to) and check in with you regularly about how you're feeling, to help make the experience feel much less stressful.
If you're concerned about pain, it's a good idea to talk to us ahead of time and let us know your preferences or fears, we will aim to be as accommodating as possible. Look forward to seeing you soon.
